Designed by Tim Eisner, Three of a Kind is a light party game for 2-8 players where you're given a category and three 'adjectives'. Players all jot down their answer/response for each adjective and they compare their answers, scoring a point for each match.
Three of a Kind then is all about being on the same wavelength as the other players. If you have a sense of deja vu it's because the game is similar to the 'Mr & Mrs' TV quiz show where married couples were separately quizzed on a topic and their answers were compared. When picking the category and adjective cards players have some choice, which helps to minimise the possibility of a total mismatch of prompts where the category relates to inanimate objects but the adjectival descriptors call for a named person.
Tho' the game may not win any awards for originality, this party game package is well produced by Weird City Games. With two huge decks of category and adjective cards there's plenty of play value in the box, and the game comes with eight dry-wipe pens and cards on which players can record their answers and their scores.
You can play with just two or three but this game is at its best at higher player counts where there is bound to be at least some overlap even when the category and adjective combos turn out to be quite broad and all-encompassing, and with more players the party game aspects come through as players find amusement in each other's disparate responses.
Three of a Kind is due to arrive on retail shelves on 4 September.
