Whether it's Jamboree Bags or Kinder Surprises, we've always enjoyed the excitement of opening something up and never being quite sure what we'd find inside. It's a thrill that followed us as we progrsssed from children's sweets to modern board games. We got it from opening up Collectible Card Game packs and it's continued big time with the successive releases of Heroclix Booster Packs from WizKids. Collector's Trove is the latest Marvel Heroclix release: a punning title because it's named for the Marvel super-villain The Collector but with a nod too to it's appeal to the legion of Heroclix collectors.
Shown here on Board's Eye View is a Collector's Trove Booster Brick and just some of the figures inside. This release incorporates an array of figures from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond. Of course, there's The Collector but there's also the motley crew from Guardians of the Galaxy, including Groot and a separate Baby Groot Heroclix figure that you can substitute if Groot is KO'd. Our favourite Guardians of the Galaxy sculpt is Drax, who is portrayed leaping through the air, mid-attack. There are some great sculpts too of other Marvel characters, including Iron Man and other members of the Avengers. Of course, you don't know exactly what's in the Booster Pack until you open it... Each individual 'Booster Pack contains five pre-painted miniatures with a card for each that sets out that character's abilities and shows in chart form all the stats on the figure's Heroclix dial. The Collector's Trove Booster Brick is made up of 12 packs rather than the usual 10, and you can expect to find Common and Uncommon figures and at least one Rare or Super-Rare figure in each pack.
For those unfamilar with Heroclix, it's a system where the miniatures have a dial built into the base that shows the figure's stats. The idea is that when a character takes a hit, you rotate the dial and it shows that character's suitably amended stats; eventually, after a number of clicks, it'll show that the character is knocked out. You typically play Heroclix by building your own team of characters and pitting the teams against each other.
WizKids have been releasing Heroclix sets for more than 20 years. Over that time they've covered a lot of different IPs but the vast majority of releases have been from the Marvel and DC comics universes. In all, they've sold a staggering 750 million figures! And counting... because the Collector's Trove figures are officially released today and should available now on retail shelves.
