Captain Obvious

Writer: Board's Eye ViewBoard's Eye View

Designed by Urtis Sulinskas, Captain Obvious is a competitive party game from Lucky Duck where players are trying to guess the missing word in a sentence. The box includes pens and dry-wipe cards for up to 10 players.

Each round, one player chooses a number from 1-7 before flipping a word card. The word at the indicated number becomes their key word and they must write a sentence that uses that word. They want the sentence to be as obvious as possible because they have to pass the sentence they write onto another player who will delete one of the words but obviously not the key word. The sentence is then read out with the word omitted and the remaining players have to guess the missing word. Players just get one guess, and you score a point if you are the first to correctly guess the word. The writer of the sentence also gets a point if anyone guesses the word correctly. The player who deleted the word scores a point if nobody guesses the deleted word.

It's a fun game, tho' it does demand some sentence composition. The games comes with a custom six sided die (5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8) and the sentence writer is expected to role that to determine the number of words in their sentence. If tho' you find that unduly restrictive, the rules offer alternative ways of setting sentence length (for example, agreeing in advance that all sentences must contain, say, six words). The short rules also offer some other minor variants and special rules to better enable the game to be played with just three players, but you'll enjoy Captain Obvious more at higher player counts. For the team at Board's Eye View, 5-7 players has been the sweet spot: enough players to keep the guessing competitive but not so many that the game overstays its welcome. This could be the obvious choice for your after-dinner Christmas game.
